چکیده

European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) is an aquaculture species with the potential for expanded cultivation in fresh and brackish waters of Northern Europe. Yet, relatively little species-specific information available regarding stress responses associated welfare implications this captivity. We addressed knowledge gap by using a combination implantable heart rate bio-loggers range traditional indicators (e.g. haematological parameters plasma concentrations cortisol, glucose ions) to comprehensively evaluate physiological freely swimming captivity, as well when subjected practices stressors that commonly occur prior during slaughter. Whitefish appeared recover rapidly from surgery, resting decreased within 36 h stabilize at ~25 beats min?1 next 18 days fish were left undisturbed (i.e. personnel only present feeding fish). In contrast previous studies on farmed rainbow trout Atlantic salmon, did not exhibit clear circadian rhythm, which may be related differences diurnal locomotor activity. also appear have well-developed capacity thermal acclimation rate, daily change period despite increase body temperature ~6.8 11.2 °C. Following acute such crowding transportation, response typically involved transient elevations cortisol glucose, red blood cell swelling, while [K+] decreased. contrast, plummeted following brailing haul brail/net) CO2 exposure slaughter, [Ca2+] significantly increased. An unforeseen finding concerns substantial long-lasting observed held close proximity ~10 m) net pen, mean increased ~32 43 ~34%). This represent innate threat predation, consequently increases allostatic load energetic expenditure alongside salmonids. To conclude, study highlights importance performing long-term, evaluations real settings, provides platform further research aiming determine simultaneously farming predatory prey proximity.

Temporal spawning divergence in European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus)

A critical step in ecological speciation is the development of reproductive isolation. The processes leading up to reproductive isolation are difficult to study since they often occur over very long time periods. Populations of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) has gone through reticulate divergent evolution in many Scandinavian lakes during the last 10 000 years. Some populations even e...

Alizarin marking of whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus otoliths during egg incubation

Alizarin red S from 200 to 5000 mg L was used to mark the otoliths of whitefish embryos Coregonus lavaretus (L.) from 5 days after fertilization until shortly before hatching, to develop a method for evaluating the effect of stocking whitefish. Mark quality depended on developmental stage at the time of immersion. The best results were obtained when the otolith primordia had formed and had star...

Physiological stress and pathology in European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) induced by subchronic exposure to environmentally relevant densities of Planktothrix rubescens.

Planktothrix rubescens belongs to the most ubiquitous cyanobacterial species in mesotrophic and oligotrophic lakes in the pre-alpine regions. In most of these lakes, coregonids are among the dominant species of the ichthyofauna with great importance for the professional fishery. A possible link between the occurrence of toxic Planktothrix blooms and the recurrent slumps in coregonid yields has ...

A proteomics approach reveals divergent molecular responses to salinity in populations of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus).

Osmoregulation is a vital physiological function for fish, as it helps maintain a stable intracellular concentration of ions in environments of variable salinities. We focused on a primarily freshwater species, the European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus), to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying salinity tolerance and examine whether these mechanisms differ between genetically simila...

Human-induced changes in the reproductive traits of Lake Constance common whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus).

Size-selective fishery harvest leads to phenotypic changes in fish reproductive traits. When these changes represent an evolutionary response of a stock, they may have severe consequences for future stock dynamics and yields. In freshwater ecosystems, reproductive traits may also be affected by other human impacts such as changes in system productivity. The present study uses regression analysi...
